South Jeolla Province Apologizes for Governor's Controversial Remarks on 'Importing Young Virgins'
South Jeolla Province has issued a formal apology after Jindo County Governor Kim Hee-soo sparked widespread outrage with his suggestion to 'import young virgins' from Sri Lanka and Vietnam. The governor's remarks, made during a town hall meeting, were deemed deeply offensive and disrespectful, especially to the Vietnamese community.
In a statement, the province's spokesperson expressed deep regret, saying, 'We bow our heads in apology to the Vietnamese people and women who have been deeply hurt by these comments. We understand that the use of the word 'import' undermines human dignity and objectifies women, and we acknowledge that such expressions cannot be justified in any context.'
The spokesperson emphasized that the governor's remarks contradict the province's core values of human rights, gender equality, and multiculturalism. South Jeolla has a significant Vietnamese population, and the governor's comments were seen as a direct attack on their dignity and culture.
Governor Kim Hee-soo, in a follow-up statement, clarified his intention, saying, 'I intended to propose measures to increase the number of unmarried foreign women to support marriage among single men in rural areas. However, my choice of words was inappropriate and led to a misunderstanding. I deeply regret using the term 'import' and acknowledge its potential to cause offense and discomfort.'
The Vietnamese Embassy in Korea has also expressed its disappointment, stating that the comments could strain diplomatic relations. The embassy's letter called for responsible governance and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
